Tools for Change

If film has the power to communicate - stories, experiences, ideas, meaning - then how can we harness that full potential and use it as a trigger for change? Can 'issue-based' creative work become an effective instigator of change?

Traditional film distribution means short films generally reach their audiences through festivals, reaching short film makers and enthusiasts, but not far beyond. Individual works appear in a vast and eclectic programme which gives little pause for audience reflection or response. Bombarded by images and ideas, at the end of a day's viewing, the audience is pushed to recall much more than fleeting images and even the most powerful ideas may be swamped.

So what other means exist for distributing films and applying the ideas they communicate? How can we encourage and assist an audience to interact with the issues raised? This project will investigate a range of possible approaches from internet streaming to gallery installation and DVD-based learning materials, examining distribution routes and agents, packaging and marketing and the screening context.
